Purple Sprouting Broccoli (A5a)

The weather here has been so mild this winter the purple sprouting broccoli has started to flower early. I usually expect the flowering to happen in March. Elsewhere the daffodils are emerging, the almonds have budded and are about to flower. I fear a late winter given this early spring-like weather.

Work about the allotment continues with 'winter' tasks - pruning, repairing, rebuilding, weeding, mulching, resetting and general sorting out in preparation for the growing year to come.

PSB - re-staking and re-netting

In Plot B-top - the perennial garden

 B4a/B3a/B2a
B4a - used last year for the leaf-mould basket - planted with garlic in November - a new perennial planting needed for this year
B3a - gooseberries, hazels (hazels yet to be pruned), crow garlic
B2a - hazels, gooseberries, alpine strawberries, chicory, sedum.

 B3a/B2a

 B3b - 3 cornered garlic, raspberry, jostaberry

 B4c/4b - rhubarb

Plot B - top
globe artichoke in the foreground.

This year I hope to make more progress with the development of Plot B-top - the perennial garden - introducing more perennial herbs around and about the fruit bushes and trees.

In the library of the allotment garden of Nowhere in particular:

Permanent Publications - Edible Perennial Gardening - Growing Successful Polycultures in Small Spaces - Kelsey, Anni - 2014 - ISBN-978-1-85623-1497.

This is one of the books I will use to guide me in this task. This coming week I will continue to sort out and catalogue the 2020 seed collection and prepare some saved seeds for a seed exchange. The seeds I'll be looking out for at the exchange will be those I can use for Plot B-top.
