P2 - Cinnamon Vine - Dioscorea polystachia (left)
grown (in 2019) with amaranth, thai basil, cucumber, nicotiana, sweet pea,
nasturtium....

 vines - twining clockwise

aerial tubers where the leaf stems join the main stem

The plant was propagated from bulbils in spring 2018 - the seedlings were planted
in a container to further raise them above the raised beds
so as to allow room for the long deep growing tubers.

The sides of the container removed, and soil pulled away from the roots
and tops of the tubers.

The raised beds are as high as they are (15-20cm) because there are trees beside the
polytunnel and their roots are growing into the polytunnel space
at a shallow level.
(a potted echium nearby)

Is this another form of cinnamon vine tuber/bulbil?

The soil of this raised bed is very dry and hard/consolidated
perhaps too hard for easy excavation of the delicate yam tubers
too dry for the plant to grow as well as it could.

 A near complete tuber/root

One of the tubers has been left in the raised bed - with soil restored around and
above it - a bottomless pot installed to keep the soil/tuber contained.

Tubers to be stored in dry soil - they may be replanted in containers/outdoors.
